Posted: 07 Sep 2013 11:19 AM PDT Danger: Smoothies and juices contain deceptively high amounts of sugar Smoothies and fruit juices have been branded the 'new danger' in the battle against obesity. The two scientists who blew the lid on the corn syrup in soft drinks scandal described claims that smoothies are good for us as 'deceiving', arguing they contain the same amount of sugar as a large coke. And Barry Popkin and George Bray say that while smoothies are lauded for containing the equivalent of six oranges, they actually provide none of the health benefits received by simply eating an orange instead. In an interview with The Guardian, Popkin said: 'Smoothies and fruit juices are the new danger. 'It's kind of the next step in the evolution of the battle. 'And it's a really big part of it because in every country they've been replacing soft drinks with fruit juice and smoothies as the new healthy beverage.' Popkin, a professor at the department of nutrition at the University of North Carolina, added that in recent years soft drinks firms such as Coca Cola and Pepsi had been buying up juice and smoothie rivals around the world. In the UK, Coca Cola owns Innocent and Pepsi, Tropicana. He explained that Pepsi in particular had marketed a 250ml portion of its smoothies as providing two of the nation's five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Prof Popkin is pushing for the five-a-day advice to change as drinking a smoothie does not affect our overall food intake, whereas eating just one orange does. He added: 'So pulped up smoothies do nothing good for us, but do give us the same amount of sugar as four to six oranges or a large coke. It is deceiving.' In 2004 Popkin and Bray exposed the dangers posed by soft drinks, which contained high levels of fructose added to soft drinks in the form of corn syrup. They identified these types of sugar-sweetened drinks, which are loaded with calories and consumed between meals, as a major reason for soaring obesity levels in developed countries. Fructose: Naturally occurring sugars in fruit juices and smoothies are continuing to fuel the obesity crisis But as people have changed their drinking habits to avoid fizzy drinks, the damage caused from naturally occurring fructose in juices and smoothies is continuing to fuel the problem. They say all sugars are equally bad in the effect they can have on our health. China has created a huge supply of apple juice concentrate, which they claim is the cheapest sweetener on the market and is being used to get around the sugar quotas that many countries now have. Tax: Campaigners say 20p on a litre of soft drink would raise £1billion In 2012 Popkin published data that identified fruit juice concentrate as being the second most common sweetener in soft drinks and babies formula milk, after corn syrup. Last week, in a report by the British Medical Association, found those who drank fruit juice were more at risk of developing the obesity related type two diabetes than those who ate whole fruit. According to the British Soft Drinks Association, the consumption of soft drinks containing added sugar has fallen by nine per cent in the last 10 years, while the incidence of obesity has increased by 15 per cent. It said: 'Obesity is a serious and complex problem requiring concerted action by a wide range of organisations as well as by people themselves. 'Soft drinks companies recognise the role they have to play.' Health campaigners have made calls for the introduction of a soft drinks tax. Sustain claimed by placing a 20p tax on a litre of soft drink, it would raise £1billion, which could be ring-fenced and invested in children's health initiatives. Director of the British Heart Foundation research group at Oxford University, Mike Rayner, believes introducing the tax would reduce consumption of soft drinks. Speaking to The Guardian, he said: 'The problem with sugar is its calories really and it's easily digestible. 'And it tends not to come with anything particularly useful, so sugary drinks are problematic because they are an easy way of getting calories - not because it's sugar, but because it's calories.' In a statement, Innocent defended its products, claiming people with juice drinks in their diet tended to have lower rates of obesity than others. The company added: 'Smoothies are made entirely from fruit and therefore contain the same amount of sugars that you would find in an equivalent amount of whole fruit.' Defence: Innocent, owned by Coca Cola, claims smoothies contain the same amount of sugar as whole fruit |
Notorious Cultist Dies After molesting 5-Month-Old Pregnant Woman Posted: 07 Sep 2013 11:13 AM PDT A notorious cult member, identified as Tunde Lawal, was reportedly shot in the chest during a clash with rival groups after he and another cult member identified as Para Alabi had accosted and molested a 5-month pregnant woman. Lawal, 23 was reported to be a member of the Eiye cult group terrorising the community and reportedly met his death in the evening of Tuesday, September 3, 2013. The duo reportedly left the woman unconscious at the scene of the rape before finding their way to where Lawal met his death. It was reported that barely an hour after Lawal and his partner-in-crime arrived at a beer pub, about 12 members of a rival cult group arrived in a big bus. They headed straight for the place where the Eye group was seated. Almost immediately a heated argument ensued among them and members of the two groups reportedly started firing into the air as if to scare the other group and when Lawal wanted to engage the leader of the opposing group in the fight, he was shot twice in his chest. He immediately slumped and died, lying in the pool of his blood. About six other members of the two groups were severely wounded before others took to their heels. According to the community leader, "That boy (Lawal) and his gang are thorn in the flesh of everyone of us in this area. The most annoying aspect of it is that we heard that the parents of most of these bad boys live close to us here, but they could not call their sons to order". A police source at Alade Police Station claimed that some relatives of Lawal came to the station to demand for documents to enable them collect his remains from the mortuary, which they were immediately issued. |

Either You Like It Or Not, Nigerian Gays Have A Right- Yemisi Ilesanmi Posted: 07 Sep 2013 10:58 AM PDT All she told TELL Magazine below; What Nigerians need to know about homoséxuality: The very first thing we need to understand is that homoséxuality, biséxuality, aséxuality are all as natural as heteroséxuality. Our séxual orientation differs; we are born with an innate ability to be emotionally or séxually attracted or not be séxually or emotionally attracted to same séx or opposite séx. Unfortunately, many African societies do not provide enabling environments to discuss séxual orientation. Séxual orientation does not harm anyone. A person who is attracted to opposite séx does not harm anyone so far it is a consensual adult relationship. A homoséxual who is attracted to the same séx does not harm anybody so far it is a consensual adult relationship. A Biséxual or Panséxual who can be attracted to all séxes harms no one so far it is an adult consensual relationship. Even an Aséxual who is not séxually attracted to any gender harms no one. We are all different, and non-harmful lifestyle of adults should not be criminalised. If Nigerians will ever accept homosexuality: Whether Nigerians accept it or not, LGBT rights are recognised human rights. Unless, you can prove that Lesbians, gays, biséxuals and transséxuals are not human beings, well, you have no reason to deny them their fundamental human rights. Unfortunately many Nigerians believe in the concept of sin. First, we must understand that sin is a religious concept. Not every Nigerian is religious. Your religion is also a personal matter, why drag other people into your personal relationship with Jesus, Mohamed or Obatala? When I am told that homoséxuality is a sin, I just tell them their religion is not my law. The Bible or Quran is not my constitution, so why is that even coming up? It is absurd when Christian gay bashers gleefully quote Leviticus 18:22 to justify why they want to jail and stone gays. Anyone who wants to quote from Leviticus should at least read the book to make sure they are not guilty of any of the things condemned in the book. Leviticus also says you should not shave, you should not interact with a woman in her menstrual cycle, thou shall not eat shrimps or shell fish, Lev. 11:10,11:6-8 thou shall not touch the skin of a dead pig (therefore touching football without wearing gloves makes you unclean!) So, when Christians throw Leviticus at me, I simply throw Leviticus right back in their face. What her family thinks about her séxual orientation and controversies: What makes a family is love, tolerance and acceptance. Anyone who shows me love and welcomes me into their heart is my family. Love is one thing that is thicker than blood. My immediate family knows my séxual orientation, my father is late, and my mother is accepting of whom I am and has shown me love and support. To continue to be an important part of my life, you cannot be homophobic, biphobic or transphobic. If her atheism belief is connected to her séxuality: My atheism has nothing to do with my biséxuality. Atheism is simply a non-belief in God. My biséxuality is my séxual orientation, no connection. However, I must say, my atheism has helped me to stand up against religious bullies, who use the Bible and the Quran to justify their hate for gays, lesbians, transséxual and biséxuals. Religion carries a lot of unwarranted weight in Nigeria and Africa generally. This should not be so. In fact, this is one reason the African continent is still very backward. When religion carried so much weight in Europe during middle Ages, it was wrought with wars, jihads, killings and ethnic cleansing. Many religious Africans now use the 'holy' books to justify the oppression of members of their own society. Even when the original owners of the religion inform them that the book has been updated and some parts are no longer applicable, Africans still insist that it is must be applicable because it says so in the book they were given. How pathetic! |

Cossy Exposes Popular Musician Who's Begging Her For Séx Posted: 07 Sep 2013 10:46 AM PDT They mounted a stage for a scintillating performance. Cossy performed her "wicked" lap dance for him, a very tempting one. She said that after she did wonders to him on stage, the singer could not contain himself. Once they were off the stage, the guy went on his kneels, begging her for a "quick one". Trust Cossy, she exposed everything and even mentioned the musician's name: "Oga Eedris knelt down and started begging me. Well, please don't blame oga Eedris, that dance would make any man beg for the real show."You may wish to know that Cossy and Eedris Abdulkareem actually performed on one stage few weeks ago and her outfit on the stage alone was enough temptation, not to talk of the lap dance. Lolz! Anyway, Cossy said she refused to grant access to the Nigeria Jagajaga singer and the guy was sad. |
US Based Nigerian Journalist, Rilwan Omosun Dying Posted: 06 Sep 2013 11:42 AM PDT A former Sports Editor of defunct Daily Times has hit hard times in the USA and needs assistance. This is his story as posted by his friend Azuka Jebose Molokwu. In 1990, at the age of 31, I abandoned my job as the sports editor of Nigeria's first evening daily paper, Evening Times, a subsidiary of THE DAILY TIMES of Nigeria. I relocated to United States to further my education and seek professional excellence with available opportunities in the world's free press. I arrived Houston Texas, naïve and timid, with no formal training, information or survival guide kit to a migrant's settlement in America, seeking all things bright and beautiful that "Yankee" had to offer. It's "God's own country". I settled into a shared apartment with a cousin willing to accommodate me until I integrated myself into a new lifestyle and culture. Everything functioned here. Everyday, I waited for the right opportunity to be indoctrinated into the American dream life by my cousin. While waiting for the appropriate time, I was privileged a social security number registered in my name. My cousin would come home, fill out some forms and asked me to sign them and import my social security…. I trusted everything he said and unknowingly empowered his criminal and fraudulent empire. I married in 1992. Few minutes after my marriage, I was arrested by the FBI for alleged financial fraud, credit card and check frauds totaling $450,000 dollars. I never asked my cousin what I was signing. I willingly, though ignorantly surrendered my priced information to him. He used these against me.I began a long fight with Americas judicial system to clear my name. My identity had been stolen by a most trusted family member, used to commit a heinous financial crime. I was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I was and I am still innocent. Between these challenges, I got married. After years of court arguments and investigations, I was exonerated. The stress had taken a deep chunk off my soul. By 1998,I was diagnosed with kidney failure. Two years later, I had stroke that paralyzed my left body … One year after my stroke, my wife left because she could not care for a husband battered by stroke. In 2003, my ex wife who left me because I had stroke, was stroked. We have a 17 year old wonderful daughter. I moved to Maryland after my divorce to begin a new life. I carried and still wear the sad badge of a victim of Identity fraud. I am still an undocumented immigrant as a result of the identity fraud. I am an illegal terminally sick alien. I am on dialyses three days a week, thanks to a wonderful Nigerian that owns the Community Dialyses Center in Maryland. In March, doctors diagnosed me with congestive heart failure. They gave me one year to live. I have till March next year to expire. Few days ago, I called my friend and colleague, Azuka Jebose Molokwu and hopelessly told him my conditions. I wanted to go back home. I rented a room house in Maryland. The landlord was supposed to pay the light bills from my monthly rent. He allowed the bills late and lights had been interrupted. I am too weak and broke to fight him in court. I stayed In that house for several weeks without lights. I fell four times and each time stayed on the floor for eight hours because I had no help; my phone battery died and I had no power to charge my battery. I am disabled and weak. I wanted to return home. This afternoon, I checked into a homeless shelter. But the female administrator said I didn't belong there, after seeing my condition. She tearfully paid for my taxicab ride back to the Motel. I will be here until Azuka helps me…I am back to Motel 6, hoping for your assistance. Azuka convinced me that returning to Nigeria may not be the best option. I have a seventeen year old daughter that is close to me. I want her to bury me. I need your help in getting an apartment or a house the next one year or until my life expires. You are my family. After all, we are God's children". Posted: 06 Sep 2013 11:37 AM PDT As Congress debates whether to support President Obama's call for a limited strike against Syria for the alleged use of chemical weapons, Iran is vowing to back Bashar al-Assad's regime to the hilt and threatening to unleash terrorism should the U.S. strike. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's Quds Forces, Wednesday told the Assembly of Experts — the body that chooses the supreme leader — that "[w]e will support Syria to the end." And in an unprecedented statement, a former Iranian official has warned of mass abductions and brutal killings of American citizens around the world and the rape and killing of one of Obama's daughters should the United States attack Syria. "Hopefully Obama will be pigheaded enough to attack Syria, and then we will see the … loss of U.S. interests [through terrorist attacks]," he threatened. "In just 21 hours [after the attack on Syria], a family member of every U.S. minister [department secretary], U.S. ambassadors, U.S. military commanders around the world will be abducted. And then 18 hours later, videos of their amputation will be spread [around the world]." A similar act was committed in a video of the torture of William Buckley, a CIA station chief who was abducted in Beirut in 1984 and later killed by Hezbollah on Iran's order. That video was dropped off at the U.S. Embassy in Athens. Former CIA Director William Casey later described what he saw in the video: "They had done more than ruin his body. His eyes made it clear his mind had been played with. It was horrific, medieval and barbarous." |

Mongolians bend over backwards to be world's top contortionists Posted: 06 Sep 2013 11:32 AM PDT They move as one -- a fantastical insect bewitching the Las Vegas crowds in Cirque Du Soleil's legendary stage show, called simply "O." But despite their ethereal demeanor, each petite performer possesses a rare Herculean strength and snake-like flexibility. And almost all hail from one country: Mongolia. "When you want a top baseball player, sometimes you look in America. Where we need a contortionist we look to Mongolia," said the show's artistic director, Sandi Croft.watch the video "When they dance they have a natural flexibility, even in their folk dance. It is just part of their culture to have this extra bend in delivery with their movement." Why Mongolia? The bright lights of Las Vegas are a long way from the plains of Mongolia, a sparsely populated country bordering China and Russia. But in the last 70 years, Mongolia has become a breeding ground for the world's top contortionists, who have performed everywhere from Russia's Bolshoi Theater to the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival. Indeed, while other well-meaning parents around the world might send their little girls to ballet or piano lessons, in Mongolia they're more likely to drop them off at contortion school. While Mongolian contortion has some similarities to ancient folk dances and yoga poses, it was the launch of the State Circus in the 1940s that saw it really take off as a professional art form. When the contortion school's first official trainer, the now legendary Tsend-Ayush, began performing across the country, she quickly inspired a generation of girls hoping to quite literally mold themselves in her likeness. By eight years old I could do most of the technical moves -- I was considered a professional. Nomintuya Baasankhuu, former contortionist One of those children was then-eight-year-old Angelique Janov, now the trainer for Cirque du Soleil's "O." "We'd never seen anything like Tsend-Ayush before," she said. "It was her combination of strong technical skills and the beautiful way she moved to the music -- she made it look so easy. "After that, every little girl wanted to be a contortionist." Child's play Of course, training to be a contortionist is far from easy. Students as young as five train for around three hours a day, five days a week. They build up their strength, flexibility and balance through various exercises such as handstands, splits, and push-ups. "My homework was 300 push-ups a day," said 29-year-old Nomintuya Baasankhuu, former contortionist and Arts Program director at the Arts Council of Mongolia. "It was intense. But by eight years old I could do most of the technical moves -- I was considered a professional." There are some risks -- Baasankhuu suffered a knee injury after falling from a human tower three meters high. But many contortionists insist that much like any sport, it is safe if done properly. "Contortion is not dangerous," said 63-year-old Cirque du Soleil trainer Janov. "It's like yoga -- if you're stretching every day you stay young." Naturally gifted? Such rigorous training regimes have been a huge factor in the Mongolians' success around the world. But how much of a role does genetics play? "Some people are naturally more flexible and this is often due to genetics -- if one of our parents is flexible, we're more likely to be flexible too," said Tim Allardyce of the British Osteopathic Association. "That said, a naturally flexible person would not be able to get themselves into positions that contortionists can without extensive training -- it is only very gradually, over many months and years, that the ligaments and muscles lengthen, allowing the joints to become more mobile." World of opportunity For many youngsters in Mongolia, contortion is seen as more than simply a hobby -- it's a golden ticket to the world. "Mongolian contortion is globally competitive -- today many performers work for Cirque du Soleil and other international circus companies," said Baasankhuu, who also researched the history of Mongolian contortion at the National University of Mongolia. "That is why so many girls would like to become contortionists and travel around world and make living from it." So what is it about these mysterious performers that continues to beguile audiences across the world? Janov perhaps summed up their allure best: "It's the realization that an individual can do things that seem impossible." |
