| Ugandan Girl Serves Six-Hour Jail Term For Killing Her Rapist Father Posted: 12 Sep 2013 11:08 AM PDT  It was probably one of the most unusual sentences delivered in the country, but the case was just as unusual as it was heartrending. The Masaka High Court presided over by Lady Justice Margaret Oumo Oguli, Monday heard that 18-year-old girl killed her father on May 8, after he had raped her. It was not the first time he was doing so. The 58-year-old man had been raping the daughter repeatedly from the time she was 13 years old. Prosecution led by Peter Mugisha told court that the convict violently killed her father using a knife and a panga after the deceased performed sexual acts against her. Mr Mugisha, however, asked court to give her a maximum sentence which requires death, saying the act she performed was illegal. A lenient sentence His argument was that she should have reported the matter to police and not killed him. Defence led by Mr Edward Kikirengoma, however, did not agree with the State, saying the act the father did to his daughter was condemned, especially in Buganda Kingdom. Mr Kikirengoma told court that the convict needed to take charge of her life since she had become tired of her father's cruel acts, adding that court should look into the condition of the girl as she was six months pregnant, with the child of her father. "..... revealed that as she was sleeping in the house, she did not know that her mother, 56, had gone out; her father learnt that his wife wasn't in the house and came into her bed and raped her. Since they were living in a one-room rented house, the father took advantage of his own children," Mr Kikirengoma said. It emerged that the man had also impregnated his three other daughters. Defence therefore asked court to give the killer a lenient sentence.  |

The man is my girlfriend's ex-boyfriend who went to America 7 years ago. He's back in Nigeria now and wants to marry her but she told him she's in a relationship with me and can't leave me. I think he believes he can get her if I'm out of the picture hence the offer. | Fans Slam Karen Igho Over Semi Nude Photos Posted: 11 Sep 2013 12:00 PM PDT Big Brother Africa winner, Karen Igho, never seems tired of being in the spotlight, but this time for the wrong reason. On Sunday, 8 September, the reality television star stirred the hornets' nest when she posted semi-nude pictures of herself lounging around a swimming pool on Instagram, a social media site. Immediately the pictures started circulating, she received a barrage of verbal attacks from numerous fans who felt disgusted that she could share such private pictures. While some even considered Karen's toned body as too masculine and the boobs fake, others were peeved that she would post her semi nude pictures without taking cognisance of her unshaved armpit. "Is that hair I'm seeing in her armpit?" an anonymous fan of her had queried. Another commentator named Arielle went further: "Nice body, but wetin make she no cum shave her armpit, abi she forget to bleach that part too?" One commentator simply named Memphis on Stella Dimoko's blog went sarcastic in her defence: "Na wa for all of una wey de shout "armpit". Do you expect Karen of all people to come out like this in public without shaving her pits? Her pits are shaved biko, just that they are dark for some reason. | Wife pleads for Anglican Archbishop’s release » Posted: 11 Sep 2013 11:46 AM PDT  Mrs Beatrice Kattey, the wife of the kidnapped Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of the Niger Delta, Most Reverend Ignatius Kattey has appealed for her husband's unconditional release. Bishop Kattey was abducted Friday night in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, along with his wife but she was later abandoned. For the past five days, no word has been heard from either Archbishop Kattey or his abductors. Mrs Kattey was very emotional when she received Mr George Feyii, the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, SSG, who represented Governor Chibuike Amaechi. Feyii, on behalf of Amaechi, was on a sympathy visit to the family of Archbishop Kattey at their residence in Alode-Eleme in Eleme Local Government Area of the state. "My husband is a man of God that preaches peace, he believes in God and wherever he is, God is with him, we are sure he will be well, but he should be released", Mrs Beatrice Kattey said. Wife of the Anglican Bishop also expressed regrets over the security lapses in the state and called for serious concern and attention to avert future re-occurrence. Amaechi has, however, enjoined Christian religious leaders to intensify prayers for the unconditional release of the Archbishop Ignatius Kattey.  Bishop Kattey and his wife Beatrice "This administration wants to assure you that it identifies with this family because the kidnap of the Archbishop is a very serious matter and it has compelled us to identify with the family, and right now, everything is on track to ensure that Kattey returns to continue his assignment with God". Amaechi urged the family of Bishop Kattey to remain strong in their prayers and trust in the Lord for His intervention and release of the kidnapped Anglican Archbishop by unknown gunmen. Governor Amaechi further appealed to the kidnappers of Bishop Kattey to urgently effect his release to enable him continue his ecclesiastical call to the service of God and humanity, which he stressed, is for the benefit of all Nigerians and betterment of society. Also speaking at the event, Chancellor of the Diocese of the North, Sir Emeka Ichioku expressed confidence that Archbishop Ignatius Kattey will return to his family unharmed and healthy. Earlier, Chairman of Clergy Association of the Diocese of the Anglican Communion of Niger Delta North, Venerable Richard Okpara also offered prayers for the family of Kattey and God's intervention for his unconditional release.  |
| $11m fraud: Nigerian jailed in The United States » Posted: 11 Sep 2013 11:37 AM PDT  A Nigerian, Emmanuel Ehkator who was investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC for criminal conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud in the United States of America has been sentenced by District Court Judge, Middle District of Pennsylvania, Yvette Kane, to a three-year term. He was also ordered to pay $11,092,028 in restitution to his victims. The conviction of Ehkator, 42, who was arrested in Nigeria by the EFCC in August 2010 and extradited to the United States in August 2011, followed his plea of guilt. In a statement by Wilson Uwujaren, its spokesperson, EFCC said Justice Kane also ordered Ehkator's forfeiture of properties in Canada and the contents of several bank accounts in Nigeria. While the trial lasted, the prosecutor informed the court that Ehkator was part of an attorney collection scam. Their modus operandi, he said was for the convict to contact U.S. and Canadian law firms by e-mail claiming to be individuals or businesses outside North America who were owed money by entities in the United States and asked for legal representation to collect the money. The prosecutor further told the court that, "often, the prospective "clients" said the money owed came from a real estate transaction, tort claim, or divorce settlement. Once the law firm agreed to represent the out-of-country client, the law firm would be contacted by the U.S. entity purportedly owing money with an offer to pay the client by cheque. The client would instruct the law firm to deposit the cheque in the law firm's trust account, retain the law firm's fee, and wire the remaining funds to accounts in Asia". The cheque that was then mailed to the law firm would be a counterfeit cheque, a fact that would be discovered only after funds from the law firm's trust account had been wired to the Asian bank, the prosecution said. The counterfeit cheques, which appeared to be drawn on legitimate accounts from well-established financial institutions, often included a telephone number for the financial institution. Lawyers attempting to determine the validity of the cheque would call the number only to reach another conspirator who would falsely verify the cheque. The court was also told that Ehkator's involvement in the scheme makes him responsible for losses of more than $7 million and up to $20 million. Ehkator's co-defendant, Yvette Mathurin, has also been charged for conspiracy and is awaiting extradition from Canada while another co-conspirator, Kingsley Osagie, was arrested as he arrived in the Atlanta area from Nigeria and is currently awaiting trial in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Other co-conspirators are pending extradition from several foreign countries as investigation continues against other members of the large, multi-national conspiracy. Aside from the EFCC, other agencies that investigated the crime were the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Secret Service, the Toronto Police Services and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy H. Fawcett.  |
| Posted: 11 Sep 2013 11:38 AM PDT  Officials of the Lagos State Government in conjunction with the police taskforce have arrested four cows and 37 butchers for operating at an illegal slaughter slab at Otto Awori area of Badagry, Lagos, southwest Nigeria. Officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, with the taskforce, stormed the area on Tuesday and arrested the cows and suspects. Four vans of butchered meat were also carted away to the Taskforce office at Alausa where the suspects would be arraigned in court. The four cows were taken to Agege Abattoir. Chairman of the illegal butchers, Adewunmi Olaseun, said they normally slaughter about 20 cows on daily basis, adding that they also pay N18,000 levy to officials of the Lagos State Government and N5,000 to the Otto Awori Local Council Development Area, LCDA, on weekly basis. He said the association did not know that they were operating at an illegal slaughter slab. Olaseun said the meat being sold by the butchers was not contaminated, stressing that "the fact is that we also consume the meat at times. So, there is nothing wrong with the meat. We consume it. Our wives also consume it, so it is safe for consumption. We have the receipts of the payment made to the government in our office." When asked why they attacked government officials with charms, he said: "The charms on us were to protect us against armed robbers. We deal with money and we can't allow robbers to kill us just like that. So, it is meant for protection against robbers." Another butcher, Ogundele Opeloyeru, said they had been operating in the area for the past 15 years, while corroborating his colleague's statement that they pay weekly levy to the state government and Otto Awori LCDA. "We are not aware that we operate illegal slaughter slab," he said. Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture and Co-operatives, Mr Nuraini Funso denied that government officials collect money from the illegal butchers. "There are certified veterinary doctors in the entire registered and approved abattoirs in the state and there is a lot of danger in patronising illegal slaughter slabs. The state government is doing enough to eradicate illegal slaughter slabs and abattoirs in the state . "Residents had been equally warned to desist from patronising unregistered and unapproved abattoir. The state is very must concerned about the health of individuals in the state. We can't afford to allow Lagosians to consume meat that are not screened. They are not just ready to change. We have about eight slaughter slabs and over 200 refrigerated meat vans. They are just concerned about their pockets," he explained. Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Dr. Yakub Bashorun said government has declared zero tolerance for unwholesome meat distribution in the state, lamenting that those who operate illegal slaughter slabs do so without obtaining license from the government. "They don't have veterinary doctors to ascertain the health status of the animals before slaughtering them. They have been creating nuisance and we have to dislodge them. Ignorance is no excuse. They know they are operating illegal abattoir," he stated. Bashorun appealed to Lagosians not to patronize illegal slaughter slabs to purchase meat as such meat was not healthy for consumption. | Apple unveils two new iPhones -- the 5S and 5C Posted: 11 Sep 2013 11:29 AM PDT  Apple unveiled two new iPhones on Tuesday, a traditional upgrade of its iPhone 5 as well as a simpler, cheaper version.Apple CEO Tim Cook said the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C are a reaction to a changing smartphone market. "Business has become so large that this year we are going to replace the iPhone 5 and we're going to replace it with not one, but two new designs," Cook said. "This allows us to serve even more customers." The iPhone 5C was the first phone demoed at Tuesday's event at Apple's Cupertino, California, headquarters.  iPhone 5S to come in gold, gray, silver Check out Apple's new iPhone 5C iPhone 5S has fingerprint technology"It has an incredible all new design, one that's more fun, more colorful than any iPhone we've made yet," said Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president for marketing. The phone will sell for as little as $99, for a 16GB version, and $199 for one with 32GB of storage (each with a two-year mobile contract). In a departure, Apple will also be making its own cases for the 5C, selling them in a variety of colors for $29. Then there's the iPhone 5S, which is the more traditional update to the iPhone 5. "It is the gold standard in smartphones," Schiller said. The 5S features a handful of performance upgrades, including what Apple calls a dramatic increase in processing speed. It will have the first 64-bit chip in a smartphone -- Apple's A7 -- which Schiller said has tested at up to twice as fast as the iPhone 5's processor. It also will have a new feature, a motion co-processor, that will let the phone be used as a fitness tracker along the lines of a FitBit. Schiller said battery life will be "the same or better" than the iPhone 5 and its camera will have 15% more active sensor space, improved white balance and auto-focus, and a new flash. Also, its camera will, for the first time on iPhone, allow video in slow motion. Arguably the most dramatic new feature on the phone, though, is Touch ID, a fingerprint scanner for added security. Users will be able to log into their phone via the home button and make purchases from iTunes using their fingerprint as a password of sorts. The iPhone 5S will sell for $199 for a 16GB version, $299 for a 32GB model and $399 for the top-end 64GB phone. Pre-orders for the iPhone 5C starts on September 13. Both versions are on sale starting September 20. Cook also announced the newest version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 7, will be released to the public on September 18. It will have over 200 new features, according to Apple, including the ability to switch voice-activated digital assistant Siri to a male voice. The iPhone has remained the world's top-selling smartphone, save for a few quarters when it was dethroned by phones in Samsung's Galaxy S line. But after making up nearly 24% of all smartphones sold in late 2011, Apple's device is now down to about 14%, while Android phones account for a whopping 79%. With the iPhone 5C, Apple is clearly looking to emerging markets like China and India, where a less expensive phone would, presumably, sell well to a massive potential customer base. Historically, rollouts of new Apple products have been near-mystical affairs for fans. But as the smartphone market has matured, some analysts say the real excitement may need to come from other products. "Apple needs a new 'hero product,' but I do not think it necessarily has to be a phone," Gartner technology analyst Carolina Milanesi told CNN. "With technology innovation slowing down, maybe they are better off turning iPhone into a market-share grabber and showing innovation in another product." A likely candidate could be the company's anticipated "iWatch." Apple is all but certain to join the emerging smartwatch market that Samsung entered last week with its Galaxy Gear device. Retired farmer Dhaqabo Ebba, from Ethiopia, says he is a staggering 160 years old, which would make him the world's oldest living man. He claims to have clear memories of Italy's invasion of his country in the 19th century - however, there is no birth certificate to prove his age. Record breaker: If Mr Ebba's claims are true, they would see him overtake French woman Jeanne Calment as the oldest person to have ever lived. She died aged 122 years and 164 days in 1997 He then recounted his eight-day horseback rides to Addis Ababa as a child - a journey that takes only a few hours today. As Mr Ebba grew up in an oral society, there is no paper trail and no living witnesses to verify his age. However, if his claim can be medically confirmed, he would oust 115-year-old Misao Okawa, who is currently recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living person. He would also overtake French woman Jeanne Calment as the oldest person to have ever lived. Ms Calment died in 1997 at the age of 122. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has warned against possible reprisal attacks if the United States attacks Syria, saying that if there were military strikes, Americans can "expect every action."
