Obama to meet with Russian gay rights advocates Posted: 06 Sep 2013 11:22 AM PDT Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law passed by parliament that bans the public discussion of gay rights and relationships where children might hear it. Violators can be fined and, if they are foreigners, deported. Obama, who has advocated gay rights and same-sex marriage, has said that "nobody's more offended than me" by the Russian law. Critics say the Russian law is so vague that anyone can be prosecuted for wearing a rainbow T-shirt or holding hands in public with someone of the same sex. At the event Friday in Russia, Obama is due to meet with representatives of groups that support a range of causes, including media freedom, protection of the environment and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. The controversy over the law is one of several disputes between the United States and Russia, including the question of possible military action against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Moscow's decision to shelter National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. Obama and Putin met briefly Thursday at the Group of 20 summit meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, shaking hands and exchanging a few words. Officials said the two leaders could have a longer meeting on the margins of the event. Obama had previously canceled a summit meeting with Putin scheduled around the G20 event after Russia gave temporary asylum to Snowden, whom the United States wants to prosecute for leaking documents about NSA surveillance programs. |
Being caught naked is most common dream: Half of us have night terrors about public humiliation Posted: 06 Sep 2013 11:12 AM PDT A third of the population regularly have dreams about being caught naked in public, a survey has revealed. And night terrors about general public humiliation are experienced by almost half of us, it found. But many also regularly have night fantasies about sleeping with celebrities and appearing on a favourite television programme. Dreams about public humiliation are experienced by almost half of the population, a new survey has revealed The research was carried out by mattress merchants Ergoflex UK. It discovered 35 per cent of the nation dreams about being naked in public, the Express reports. A further 30 per cent claim to have completely nonsensical dreams which leave them baffled, and one in ten believes they dream every night. Others say they dream about favourite books and films. Many (75 per cent) also admitted that they have felt awkward after a dream about a friend, sometimes because it was of a sexual nature, and a third have argued with a partner after an 'incriminating' dream. Psychologist Sandra Wheatley told the paper that dreams about being naked can mean you are feeling particularly vulnerable. She added: 'Other dreams indicate that your sleep has been disturbed, while some show your brain is having difficulty filing information. 'Worrying in our dreams is normal and we shouldn't worry about that, it just shows we care about things.' |

Blind Man To Blind Friend: You Snatched My Wife Posted: 06 Sep 2013 11:02 AM PDT A blind man, Mr Shaibu Ibrahim, 56, of Aso Pada in Mararaba, Nasarawa State on Thursday told a Grade 1 Area Court in Mararaba that his friend, Shehu Sarki, 62, allegedly enticed his wife with money and seduced her. In his testimony to the court, Ibrahim said that he became friends with the accused some time last year when the accused assisted him to secure accommodation at Gwagalape, near Nyanya in the FCT. "He enticed my wife with money because he is rich. "He took advantage of a little misunderstanding I had with my wife over N1,000. "He was my very good friend. When he intervened, I thought he was concerned for me. I did not know that he had other evil plans," Ibrahim told the court that the accused was the one who instigated his wife against him. "When I could not provide the N1000 daily savings to secure a house, he took my wife and gave her another room in his compound. "Each time I go to see her or sit on her bed, she will send me out and say she has no business with me and that she has gotten herself a real husband now. "The accused began threatening me. He even told me that he has the money power to take my wife and marry her." Ibrahim alleged that his wife through Sarki's influence, has offered to pay him back the N19,000 he paid as dowry on her. After hearing Ibrahim's testimony, the presiding judge, Mr Albert Maga, adjourned the case till 16 September for defence. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that on 27 August, Ibrahim dragged Sarki, his friend and Chairman of the Blind Peoples' Association in Aso Pada to court for allegedly enticing his wife, Lami, 23. On the same date, Ibrahim told the court that the accused was the one who introduced him to Lami amd later enticed her and took her away from him. |

We Need Jobs ––Nigerian Youths Tell Government Posted: 06 Sep 2013 10:37 AM PDT From Port Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers State, a call has gone out to President Goodluck Jonathan to do all he can to address the issue of joblessness among youths in the region. The call was made by youths themselves, who followed up with a strong case for non-militants among them. They argued that after ex-militants in the Niger Delta were appeased with jobs, those of them who refused to take to criminality and remain peaceful in spite of hunger, also deserve to be employed. According to NATION, the youths made the appeal in a communiqué issued at the end of 2013 International Youths' Day celebration in the Rivers State capital. In the nine-point document signed by over 16 different youth groups and associations, they said empowering non-violent youths like their militant counterparts would bring about equity, justice and fairness. They stated that it would also encourage the non-militant youths to continue to engage in peaceful dialogue with the government in the event of perceived grievances. |
Posted: 06 Sep 2013 10:33 AM PDT Video footage has emerged which shows the moment seven of President Bashar al-Assad's Syrian soldiers are executed on camera by rebels fighting to overthrow the regime. The soldiers are stripped, bound and pushed to the ground where a number of rebels stand over them pointing guns at their bodies. Some bear vicious injuries on their backs and arms. Just before they are killed, the ring-leader Abdul Samad Issa - known as 'The Uncle', recites a poem before he fires the first bullet. SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO Horrific: The soldiers are stripped, bound and pushed to the ground where a number of rebels stand over them pointing guns at their bodies before they are shot The horrific scene filmed in April 2012 was documented in a video smuggled out of Syria only a few days ago by a former rebel who says he had become horrified by the brutality of the tactics his one-time comrades are using. He gave the footage to The New York Times. It has emerged as G20 leaders meet in Russia to debate the dire situation in the war-torn country and will add fuel to the view that the rest of the world cannot actively support rebels who are carrying out atrocities equally as brutal as the troops deployed by President Assad. Issa is known as 'the uncle' because two of his deputies are his nephews. His former aide, who had the copy of the footage, said the captured soldiers' allegedly had videos of them raping Syrian civilians and looting which led to the execution. Issa requested the execution be filmed so he could show it to donors to help secure more funding. At the end of the footage, the bodies of the soldiers are dumped in a well while one of the gunmen looks into the camera and smiles. Brutal: The bodies of the soldiers are dumped in a well after they are shot dead by the rebels captured soldiers. The 37-year-old, a trader and livestock herder before the war, formed the group at the start of the uprising using his own money to buy weapons and pay for his own soldiers' expenses. His father was opposed to President Hafez al-Assad, the father of Syria's current president, but in 1982, he disappeared. Issa believes he was killed during a 27-day government crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood which sparked his hatred of the government. Last year, it is believed he was running a training camp in Turkey and gathering weapons, according to the New York Times. The footage will no doubt cause problems for the U.S. which is considering attacking Syrian forces over its alleged use of chemical weapons against civilians. Yesterday, Secretary of State John Kerry spoke of the issue of radicalised rebels which he said made up 15 to 20 per cent of the opposition. Most of the concerns are centred around two groups which are known to have ties with Al Qaeda - the Nusra Front and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Earlier this year, another sickening video showed a rebel leader eating the heart of a captured soldier. Using a knife, the man hacked open the torso and removed two organs before holding them up to the camera and declaring: 'I swear to God we will eat your hearts and your livers, you soldiers of Bashar the dog.' He then raised one to his mouth and took a bite. |

Revealed: Four jails which had to change all of their locks after guards LOST the keys., Posted: 06 Sep 2013 10:34 AM PDT All the locks have had to be changed at four prisons after guards lost the keys, ministers have admitted. The taxpayer picked up the £300,000 bill to prevent mass escapes in the last three years. It can also be revealed that since the coalition was formed prison officers have lost almost 140 sets of keys, used to unlock everything from prison gates to handcuffs used to restrain the most dangerous criminals. Blunder: The taxpayer paid out £79,525 to change the locks at the category B Swaleside jail on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has unveiled plans to shut five jails, including the historic Dartmoor Prison in Devon. He argued it was time to replace old, crumbling prisons with modern super-jails housing thousands of inmates. But the Ministry of Justice this week admitted to the security blunders which meant four of the country's biggest jails had to be 'relocked' since 2010. The taxpayer paid out £79,525 to change the locks at the category B Swaleside jail on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. A further £173,608 was spent on new locks for the Glen Parva young offenders institution in Leicestershire and £84,418 on the Warren Hill young offenders institution in Suffolk. All the locks in the 1,450 capacity HMP Birmingham were also replaced at a cost of £415,276, although the bill was picked up by private firm G4S which runs the category B jail. Ministers are at pains to stress that 'there were no escapes at any of the prisons' as a result of the security error. 'Following these incidents vigilance at the prisons was increased regarding key security and events that may lead to a prison needing to be relocked,' said prisons minister Jeremy Wright. However Labour said it was 'ridiculous' that so much money had been spent because prison staff had misplaced their keys. Labour's shadow justice secretary Sadiq Khan said: 'I've heard of locking up prisoners and throwing away the keys, but losing the keys is ridiculous. 'This is breathtaking incompetence of the highest order and is money the taxpayer can ill afford to waste.' Ministers have also admitted that in the first two years of the coalition there were 136 cases of loss of keys reported by prisons. It included officers and guard losing or misplacing keys to prison gates, cells, handcuffs and escort chains. 'Prisons are overcrowded, the staff who work there are overstretched, and this is money that could be better spent on alternatives to custody, such as community sentences.' A Prison Service spokesperson said: 'Incidents like this are extremely rare. We always investigate them thoroughly and update our security measures accordingly.' |
Image Of Dead Imam Attracts Crowd » Posted: 06 Sep 2013 10:07 AM PDT Muslim faithful have continued to besiege a mosque, popularly called Alfa Shehu Mosque, at Owode-Onirin along Ikorodu road, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, where they claimed to have seen the apparitions of Sheik Ibrahim Niyyas, Sheik Hamad Tijhani and Shehu Bulala, on the walls of the mosque and neighbouring houses. People were still trooping to the mosque today, four days after the apparitions purportedly appeared on the walls. Olokunbolable ssing.blogspot.com gathered that the images had appeared a few days before the Ramadan fasting period ended but the Imam of the Mosque, Alhaji Shehu Nurudeen, had advised his children not to make the strange discovery public because people may find it difficult to believe, until a man (name withheld), went there from Apapa area of Lagos State on Tuesday morning to confirm that he had a revelation about the incident. The Imam's son, Ibrahim Nurudeen, who spoke with our correspondent on behalf of his father, said that it was after the stranger's visit that people started besieging the mosque to see the 'wonders of God' on the walls of the mosque. "When we were about rounding off the fast, my dad saw the image on the wall inside the mosque but he warned us against publicising it because people may not believe. We were however surprised on Tuesday morning when a man whom we had not seen before, came around to say that he got a revelation about Sheik Niyyas, Tijhani and Bulala, appearing on the wall. "Before we could address the issue, people had started trooping in from various parts of the country to see what was happening here. My dad had to leave the house since people started coming to confirm for themselves. I'm not surprised at the way people have been coming because those people who appeared on the walls are our legends in Islam," he said. Another Islamic cleric, Jamiu Afeez, stated that the images were looking so real at the initial stage of appearance but people trying to touch the walls made them to disappear. He also explained that they had a torrid time controlling the crowd at the mosque who came to catch a glimpse of the images. The young cleric further stated that people had been there from Offa, Ilorin and some parts of the country to confirm the incident. "The images were looking so real initially but the more people touched them, the more they disappeared. We had to call mobile policemen and soldiers to help us control the crowd here yesterday because people have not stopped coming. "We have been praying here since that Tuesday morning, day and night because it is a revelation from God and a clear indication that our prayers have been answered. The more we prayed, the more the Sheiks appeared. People have come in from Ilorin, Offa and other parts of the country to see for themselves," he explained. One of the Muslims who spoke with P.M.NEWS, said that a Christian neighbour also saw it on the wall and called the Imam's attention to it, a scenario she believed is a clear indication that God is one. The woman clad in a hijab, also said that it portrayed the height of God's presence in their midst and to further prove to the world that Islam is a religion of Light and Peace. "This is the work of God and nobody can fault it. Their neighbour who also saw it is a Christian and this clearly shows that our God is one. It is also a clear indication that God is in our midst and that he has answered our prayers; Islam is a religion of Light and Peace, this incident has proven that again," the eyewitness said, pleading anonymity. At the mosque people were still praying fervently while others bought bottled water and rubbed their bottles against the wall on which the apparition appeared, while making requests from the perceived images. Worshippers inside the mosque continued shouting 'Allahu'. At the time of filing this report, more Muslim faithful were still trooping to the mosque. Sheik Niyyas, whose appartion is causing the huge stir, was a popular Islamic cleric who was born in 1900 and died in 1975. He was born in Senegal where he is still being revered and whorshipped by some Islamic adherents in the West African country. —Damilare Okunola |
