I Wept When I Was Denied Visa, But Today I'm Best Graduating Student In Nigeria

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 10:20 AM PDT

Her name is Boluwatife Oyekan, she wanted to leave Nigeria and seek for a better life elsewhere but efforts in that regards failed as she was denied a Canadian Visa. About 5 years down the line, Boluwatife emerged the best graduating student of Caleb University, Lagos.

For Boluwatife Oyekan, achieving a first class grade is the fruit of a lot of sacrifice and self-denial:
"I never gave room for any distraction. One, I did not get involved in any amorous affair with the opposite sex. Again, I developed a workable reading time table for myself; and I kept to it."
She was the cynosure of all eyes at the institution's third convocation ceremony held at its multipurpose hall, according to Punch's Samuel Awoyinfa.

According to her, she avoided distractions on the campus, including having any romantic affair with any boy or men, attending parties and succumbing to peer pressure to indulge in frivolities.

She says, "Essentially, it is the way you are dressed that people will address you. I kept to the doctrine of my church: the Deeper Life Bible Church. I never wore any skimpy dress. In fact, I never wore earrings. So, no boy ever came to me to say, 'Bolu, I want to date you."

Apart from being the best graduating student, Boluwatife, who scored a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.75, also got other cash awards for being the best graduating student in her department, College of Pure and Applied Science. She is also the most outstanding student.

The 21yrs old graduate of Industrial Chemistry says the counselling she got from the Dean of her department, Prof. Olukayode Ajayi, also helped her a great deal. She explains that Ajayi, who counselled her on her first day in the school, told her about his own undergraduate days and how he managed his time.

She says, "He told me never to pile up my dirty clothes but to wash them as they got dirty. While others were washing their own piles of dirty clothes on Saturday, I was free from such. So, I usually headed for the academic block, where I would bury myself in my books, reading.

"The dean also advised me on how to read my notes. He said when a lecturer gives the first lecture and gives a note, I should read it. When the lecturer gives the second one, I should read it over and then go back to the first one and also read. So, on and on, that was how I pursued my study."

She adds, "I was offered admission to read Medicine. But the Canadian Embassy refused to give me visa, giving an excuse that I was not a bonafide student. I wept and almost became inconsolable. But now I believe it was God who did not want me to travel abroad then.

"Then, though I was attending a church, I was not God-fearing. It was while I was in Caleb University that I really moved closer to God, and I thank all those numerous people who came and preached at the school chapel throughout my stay there."

Boluwatife is the fourth of Mr. and Mrs. Olusegun Oyekan's six children. The mother is a nurse while the father works with an electrical company.

UNBELIEVABLE: A legend in Film Industry Pa Kasuma lives In A ‘Face-Me-I-Face-You Apartment In Mushin

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 10:18 AM PDT

One of Nigeria's most popular actors Pa Kasumu lives in a Lagos slum. We were shocked to discover that an actor of Pa Kasumu's calibre resides in a multi-tenanted rooming apartment building, commonly referred to as 'face-me-I-face-you. Photo: Victor Enengedi

No 9 Alayaki street in the densely-populated Mushin area of Lagos where Pa Kasumu lives is no different from your typical Lagos slum. It's surprising to discover that an actor of Pa Kasumu's calibre resides in a multi-tenanted rooming apartment building, commonly referred to as 'face-me-I-face-you'.

'Can you imagine I pay N150,000 every year for this apartment', Pa Kasumu told our correspondent, referring to his one bedroom and parlour apartment. The actor's room is in the upper part of the building where he shares a toilet and bathroom with many other occupants also living on the top floor. The building is not only dilapidated but also gross with filth and debris in and around the compound. Typical of this kind of living environment, households have to share facilities like the toilet, bathrooms and kitchen.

Nigerian Entertainment Today visited the actor on Thursday October 17 , 2013. Pa Kasumu tries to speak, but is clearly inaudible enough to overcome the loud noise coming from the speaker of a nearby mosque. His second son, Babajide Odumosu who was at home to take care of him was happy to give our correspondent an update on the events so far.

'This environment is really not helping him' Babajide said. 'The doctors say he needs a lot of rest. As you can see, there is no way he will be able to get that with this noise you are hearing right now. The worst part is, there is another speaker very close to his window on his bedside'

A week ago, the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola became interested in Pa Kasumu's condition and offered to help with the treatment. Babajide told us that they had undergone the series of test like the Governor instructed and are still waiting for further instruction from the governor. 'The Governor had asked for my father to go through series of tests. The doctors have fully examined him and have sent Governor Fashola a report. We are still waiting to for the next step.'

The actor shares this toilet and bathroom with many other occupants also living on the top floor.
Meanwhile the family told us that the Lagos State Government's effort to ascertain the nature and extent of Pa Kasumu's ailment has taken him to three specialist centres.

'We were referred us to First Cardiology Consultants somewhere in Ikoyi. They did some test there and they referred us to a specialist laboratory, Mecure Diagnostic Centre in Lekki. There some more tests were done and we later proceeded to Crestview Radiology in Victoria Island. The results of the tests have been concluded and I'm sure the report would have reached the governor by now'.

From the recent tests carried out, it was discovered that the ailment is spreading to other organs in his body. 'According to the results, not only are his heart and liver affected, his brain and sight have become slightly affected, hence his inaudibility and inability to see as well as before.'

But there is also good news. 'The good news is that, the doctors have said that there wouldn't necessarily be a need for a transplant or surgery', Babajide explained. 'He would have to undergo heavy physiotherapy and expensive medication for the rest of his life'

In 2011, news went viral that Pa Kasumu reportedly suffered from stroke, but was able to bounce back and made it to the first edition of Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) held in Lagos in March 2013.

Reacting to some of the reports that Fashola has made the N12 million donation, Pa Kasumu's first son, Tunde Odumosu told us,'The Governor himself has not said that he will foot the entire bill. He paid for the series of medical tests and so we as humans are just being hopeful that he will do more'

Tunde also expressed his excitement over the Governor's interest in his father's case. 'We know that the Governor is a very busy man and we cannot expect him to leave other things he is doing and focus on my father's problem. That's why we are still keeping our options open by seeking funds from other sources and hoping that Nigerians will help'

On how much has been realised from the donations made so far, Babajide says just a little above a million. 'A commissioner in Lagos State made quite a huge donation and a few friends of my father in the industry also made donations. I think right now, we have a little above one million Naira so far if I am not mistaken'

How Mr Enedo from Anambra Killed His Mum for Money Rituals

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 10:16 AM PDT

Men of the Nigerian Police Force have arrested a man identified as Mr Tonna Enedo for killing his own mother for the purpose of money-making rituals. Confessing to the crime, Mr Enedo said:
"I was asked by the chief priest of the society that if I wanted to be rich, I should go and have fun with a mad woman. I should also go and sleep with a body for seven hours; I should fast for seven days dry.
"I was told that I would first kill my father and the last stage is that I will go mad and after I might have completed all the condition, I will become the richest man in Africa, if not in the whole world."
Mr Enedo blamed his action on his quest to make money at all cost. He said he has already slept in a mortuary for seven hours as one of the conditions for the money-making rituals.
He was arrested by policemen deployed from the Obosi Police Division in Anambra state. Enedo hails from Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

He said he has met all other conditions and was planning to kill his father when he mistakenly killed his mother. He said it was after he hit a metal on her head that he realised he had killed the woman he loved most.

Now his money rituals venture has been canceled as he will be prosecuted for his crime. Really sad!

MEND Claims Responsibility For Warri Refinery Fire

By SaharaReporters, New York

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) says it is responsible for "the sabotage" today at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Refinery in Warri, Delta State.  The facility was ravaged by fire.

According to MEND in a statement, 'Hurricane Exodus' was intended to burn down the entire refining refinery.

"As long as President Goodluck Jonathan continues to rely on an unsustainable and fraudulent Niger Delta Amnesty programme, peace and security will continue to elude his government in the region," it said, adding, "'Hurricane Exodus' is on course!'"

Chocolate City gets a Court Injunction against Brymo

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 10:08 AM PDT

Oh OK, now I see the reason for Brymo's tweets yesterday. He literally can't work as an artist until he sorts himself out with Choc City. Apparently his former record label Chocolate City through their law firm, L & A legal Consultants on Monday October 21st got an injunction against him, 'restraining him from recording, releasing, distributing any composition, song, musical works or carrying out any activity as a recording or performing artist through or for the benefit of any person or organisation other than Chocolate City pending the determination of the suit against him.

Chocolate City says Brymo's contract remains valid until 2016. Brymo is too talented not to work... please y'all should sort this out!
