How This Final Years Student Swindled Women Of N7.5million

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 03:02 AM PDT

Chibuzor Akobundu, a final year student of Imo State University as been arrested by operatives of Special Fraud Unit, Ikoyi, for swindling women to the tune of $48,000 [N7.5m] all in the name of love...
Surprisingly, the 22-year-old Microbiology undergraduate confessed that his victims, resident in the United States of America, were 'swept off their feet' by his profile on the dating site.

He spoke with journalists on Tuesday, while being paraded alongside two staff of a second generation bank, who allegedly facilitated the withdrawal of money via Western Union Money Transfer.

The suspect adopted Devon Miles as his name and pasted a photograph of an unknown American citizen as his profile on a popular dating site.

Victims
He confessed to have swindled five American single women within the ages of 40 and 50, in search for husbands.

He gave the name of his first victim as Antoinette. He promised to marry her and was able to dupe her of $16,000 before she suspected he was a fraudster.

His next victim was one Jettie Simpson, who reportedly sent $5,000 to him via Western Union.

Others also duped by Akobundu were Shelly Bashir, $100; Billie Klock, $13,000, in a relationship that reportedly lasted for five months, and Andrea Desena, $8,000.

'How I operate'
Akobundu said: "I started browsing the dating site three years ago, posing as a US citizen residing in Nigeria.

"At that time, it was a common game around my area in Ikeja. Along the line I met these ladies who were looking for husbands.

"They fell in love with me because of my profile, where I stated that I was a 49-year-old divorcee in search of a wife. I claimed to be an engineer.

"I would tell them I was stranded in Nigeria and needed some money to travel back to US and they would send the money via Western Union.

"At other times, I would tell them that my daughter was sick and that I needed money to offset her hospital bill and they would fall for the trick. I have never used charm to hypnotise any of them.

"My parents were never aware of what I was into because anytime I got a reasonable amount, I would travel to South Africa and squander the money.

"My regret is that I never used the money for anything tangible, to avoid suspicion. My mum is a teacher, while my father is a businessman and have been responsible for the payment of my school fees."

Victim's story
Explaining how he was arrested, spokesperson for the Unit, Ngozi Insitume-Agu, said: "The arrest followed a petition via the Unit's website from one Amelia Brosick, a US citizen, dated April 16, 2013, where she alleged that one Devon Miles, suspected to be a Nigerian, defrauded her to the tune of $16,439 using different tactics.

"She added that she met the suspect on a dating site in June 2012, and the suspect, under the guise of dating her for the purpose of marriage, obtained the alleged sum fraudulently through Western Union.

"Armed with the petition, Western Union was contacted and they sent a detailed spread sheet showing all the transfers in the name of the suspect.

"Following the information, the duo of Nnamdi Nwakwue Dike and Olawale Oguniran attached to Western Union in Skye Bank, Owerri and Allen Avenue, Ikeja, branches, respectively, were arrested.

"Their revealing statements led to the arrest of the serial internet fraudster, Chibuzor Akobundun also known as Devon Miles, Martin Williams and Sani Bala Ismaila. He adopted Devon as the internet name, but opened the account in the name of Martin Williams.

Accomplices confess
"He confessed that he provided the bank staff with the photocopy of his identity card so that they could withdraw the monies, while he gave them some percentage.

"The bank staff also confessed that they used Uche's particulars to withdraw money from other persons' accounts without his knowledge."

However, Dike of the Owerri branch denied knowledge of what Akobundun was into. He maintained that he was only doing his job as a front-line teller staff of the bank, adding that he had never at any time paid Akobundu above the stipulated amount.

He said: "Anytime he came to collect the money, he would answer the question given correctly, including the secret code.

"Mine is to ascertain whether the details corresponded with what was in the system at the end of which I would hand his money over to him."

Asked if he received any gratification from Akobundu, he said he was given tips of N1,000 or N2,000 at times, just like some other bank customers do.

Presidency Threatens To Retaliate UK's £3,000 Visa Bond

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 02:53 AM PDT

How many British Citizens run to Nigeria to seek for better jobs or go to our mortuary to wash dead bodies in order to make money and send to their poor parents back home? The answer is 0.00!

But indications emerged on Tuesday that the Federal Government would opt for a retaliatory measure if the United Kingdom went ahead to implement its proposed £3,000 visa bond...

FG was said to have made this known during a private meeting between Foreign Affairs Minister, Olugbenga Ashiru, and British High Commissioner, Andrew Pocock, in Abuja.

Nigeria is one of the 6 countries whose nationals would be made to pay the £3,000 bond under a proposed policy that will take effect in November. The others are India, Bangledish, Ghana, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

It was gathered that Andrew Pocock admitted at the meeting with Ashiru that the UK planned to introduce the "financial bond as a way of tackling abuse in the immigration system", but added, "No final decision has been made."

Minister Ashiru, who was said to have recalled the days when nationals of Commonwealth travelled freely to the UK, expressed displeasure over the policy which he described as not only "discriminatory but capable of undermining the spirit of the Commonwealth family."

A source said, "The minister asked him [Pocock] to think about the implications a retaliatory measure would have on the two countries. The minister stressed that Nigeria might also impose £3,000 visa bond on British nationals coming into the country too."

I think Nigerian government should put more effort in developing out country.

The Reasons Why Obama Wont Come To Nigeria

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 02:50 AM PDT

The United States of America on Tuesday gave hints on the reasons why President Barack Obama won't visit Nigeria during his upcoming three-nation trip to Africa...

According to US officials, the ongoing insecurity appeared to be responsible for the exclusion of Nigeria in Obama's second visit to the continent. Obama is scheduled to visit Senegal, Tanzania and South Africa.

The US government said the trip would focus on trade and investment, democratic institution-building, young people, and enhancing economic growth.

American Deputy National Security Advisor, Ben Rhodes, made this clarifications at a briefing on Tuesday.

The briefing was addressed jointly with the Senior Director for African Affairs Grant Harris and Senior Director for Development and Democracy Gayle Smith, on Obama's upcoming visit.

The text of the briefing was made available to journalists in Abuja by the Information Office of the Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy.

Rhodes said, "Obviously, Nigeria is working through some very challenging security issues right now... at this point, we just were not able to make it to Nigeria on this particular itinerary."

Ladies; Why Men Treat You As Sex Objects & How To Stop It

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 02:46 AM PDT

A man has outlined the many deficiencies in men and woman love affair these days and the way forward:

Dear Women, first of all, we're sorry.
We're sorry that although we look like men, we often act like boys. We're not even sure what it means to be men anymore. As we grow up, we learn that to be happy is to be self-indulgent and self-centered. We try to make enough money so that we can have the right TV with the right video games in the right home.

We want to date you and maybe even marry you but we are scared to focus on someone else instead of ourselves. Isn't it sad that we see committing to you as a potential threat to our happiness instead of a wonderful opportunity? Here's what we don't understand: True happiness comes from being true men.

We think and act like boys who don't want their toys taken away. We look up to "role models" in the media who teach us to get as much gratification out of life as possible. We may claim to be spiritual, or even firm atheists, but pleasure is the god that we worship, whether we realize it or not. Unfortunately, women tend to be just another part of our hedonistic lifestyle. Please know this: True men won't treat you like an irritating obstacle or a sexual convenience.

A real man understands that women are to be cherished and treated with care and honor. He sees marriage as the opportunity to be a real-life superhero—he leaves behind his old identity and becomes a new person, dedicated to serving his wife and children. Although he will struggle at first, a true man who marries eventually understands that he can't fit through the narrow doorway to happiness if he tries to carry all of his toys with him. There is just enough room for him and his wife, arm in arm, committed to their marriage.

Women, you can help us become real men! Most importantly, we want to feel admired by you. Help us to know that you love us just as we are, even if there is room for improvement. Do this by giving us words of validation; praise us for the things we do well. This means more to us than we let on.

In return, we will make sure that you feel loved and cherished by us. We will learn to talk with you so you can be heard and understood, not so that we can tell you how to solve your problems. We'll also try to learn to express how we feel without withdrawing or getting angry. With polished communication we can learn that what makes you happy makes us happy too! What a concept!

Once again, we're sorry. We are to blame, even though good male role models are hard to find these days. We've ignored our calling to become true men and instead act like we're in high school for as long as we can. Please trust that we are capable of more than this.

If you are frustrated with the man in your life, do your best to forgive him and start fresh. After a while, if it's clear that he will not become a real man, leave him. You deserve better.

A healthy relationship will make everyone involved feel happy. When we are happy, we are capable of living meaningful and fulfilling lives alongside one another. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we journey onward to find happiness and become real men.

Sincerely,
Men

LEDAP condemns today's execution of 4 death row prisoners in Edo

Posted: 25 Jun 2013 11:07 AM PDT

A statement I just got from the Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP). Read below..
LEDAP condemns today's execution of 4 death row prisoners; Chima Ejiofor, Daniel Nsofor, Osarenmwinda Aiguokhan and Richard Igagu in Edo State despite their pending appeals at the court of appeal. The AG of Edo State and the prison authorities were duly served with the court processes comprising the notice of appeal and motion for stay of execution.
Under the Nigerian laws, an appeal and application for stay of execution should restrain further action until the appeal is determined. By executing the prisoners, Nigeria government has demonstrated gross disregard to the rule of law and respect for the judicial process.

It will be recalled that Legal Defence and Assistance Project - LEDAP and Human Rights, Social Development and Environmental Foundation - HURSDEF on the 19th of October, 2012 filed a suit at the Federal High Court Benin Division, on behalf of death row prisoners earmarked for execution by Edo State Government. In the suit, the death row prisoners in the suit contends that to execute them after over 16 years of trauma, suspense and imminent death would amount to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment. The prisoners further asked the court to order the Edo State Governor to commute their death sentences to terms of imprisonment. However, judgment was delivered today against the inmates by Hon Justice Liman of the Federal High Court Benin, holding among other grounds, that the prisoners did not place sufficient facts before the court to substantiate the relief sought in the suit.

LEDAP filed an appeal against the judgment of the Federal High Court delivered today and also a motion for stay of execution pending the outcome of the appeal and served the Notice of Appeal with the Motion for stay of execution on the Attorney General of Edo State and prison authorities in Edo State. Furthermore, all death row prisoners filed a case pending at the Court of Appeal Lagos challenging the decision of state governors to sign their execution warrants (Godwin Pius & Ors vs. Governor of Abia State & Ors).

Both appeals are pending at the Court of Appeal and the Edo State Governor and Comptroller General of Prisons are parties in both appeals. LEDAP is representing the prisoners in both appeal and also a party to the appeal in Edo State.

LEDAP  condemns the execution of the four inmates despite the pendency of the appeal and motion for stay of execution filed by the inmates. Execution of the inmates while their appeal is pending is unlawful and  amounts to a total disregard to the rule of law and judicial process in any democratic system.
